C-Lo Records, Soup Getting Cold

In 2005, Carlo Panighetti found himself in a situation that he had not been in before.  He had a 4-track cassette recorder, and people who wanted to record with him.  In December of that year, he started a band with his friends David S. Wills and Sasha Scott.  They called themselves Soup Getting Cold, and set out to record a Christmas album to give to family and friends as a cheap and fun gift.

When the playing and recording was almost done (and the album shortened to an EP), Carlo began thinking about starting a record label, mostly as a little joke to put a name on the back of this new CD that Soup Getting Cold had been working on.  In those days, some of Carlo's friends had started to call him "C-Lo," likely a play on J-Lo, because he is so pretty and talented (or, perhaps more truthfully, because if you replace the "A" and the "R" in his first name with a hyphen, you get "C-lo," and nicknames are fun).  When the day came to make the CD artwork, Carlo had not decided on a name for his new nonexistent record label, so he named it C-Lo Records at the last minute.

C-Lo Records released one more title 2 months later, Carlo Panighetti's "<3 EP."  Shortly after its highly limited (fewer than 5 copies were made) release (and immediate status as "out-of-print-probably-forever"), Carlo decided to change the name of his label, because he found out that there is a label called CLO, and he wanted to avoid confusion.

The Daily News, the new name, and beyond

Soup Getting Cold quickly went on a hiatus (but would reform a year later to release a second Christmas-themed EP, before disbanding once again.  It should be noted that none of the members of the band intended for it to be a Christmas band, but that is just how it happened.).  Carlo and David Wills went on to start a new band in the Spring of 2006, called The Daily News.  The Daily News readied their debut album by May, and this event made Carlo think harder about what he should name his label.

While talking to his long-time friend Laura McElherne (who would later release an EP, Landing Strip on Dappled Records), she sent Carlo a link to Pied Beauty, a Poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins.  The poem praises the beauty found in imperfections, and Carlo liked that, and the word "dappled" that is found within that work.  When Laura suggested that he use "dappled" in the name of his label, Carlo decided to use it AS the name of his label, and Dappled Records was born.

As of August 2009, Dappled Records has released 6 CDs:

Honesty of Purpose by The Daily News

"Myrrh" is a Great Word For Hangman by Soup Getting Cold

Zoe Ann Smith EP by The Daily News

Landing Strip by Laura McElherne

Antiquated Concepts Like Truth by The Daily News

O Dreamer by Chainsaw

Several albums and EPs are also currently in the works, including a new Daily News EP (tentatively titled Filth Tension,  and set to be recorded in january 2010), a new Chainsaw full-length, a solo album by Carlo Panighetti (a collection of demos from 2005-2009, re-recorded in 2009 for release, hopefully in time for the holiday season, titled Retro Specs), and a various artists compilation titled Dappled Things: A Dappled Records Compilation (this will be the tenth Dappled Records release, so it will be released as soon as 3 other things have, and as soon as it is finished, of course).
